 Back 2 School Safety - Driving
It is hard to believe that schools are back in session already or soon to be. With that in mind, we all need to take extra precautions as we go about our normal schedules as traffic will be at an increase. We had the pleasure of recently speaking with Sergeant Eric F. Brown of the Missouri State Highway Patrol regarding this time of year. Sgt. Brown is a Troop B Public Information Officer. Sgt Brown recommends taking the following into consideration as we go into a new school year: · As we enter another school year, drivers need to remember there will be a change in traffic patterns and volumes depending on where you live, especially around school zones. · There will be more young drivers on the road and parents shuttling children to and from. · Also note there will be several buses in the early mornings and afternoons. Remember the law and stop as school buses signal to load and unload students. For more info on this, visit revisor.mo.gov and navigate to Chapter 304.050. · Drivers need to remember to obey all traffic laws and pay attention to the job of driving. Be aware of your speed. · There will also be an increase in children walking or riding their bikes on or near the roadway. · Drivers need to be vigilant in watching for children on or near the roadway. Children can be easily distracted and accidentally run or ride their bicycle into traffic without looking. At AutoUrge, we are a fan of driving, however we also put our children’s safety first. Sgt. Brown went on to say, “Traveling to school by bus remains one of the safest modes of transportation in our country. Riding the School Bus to or from school is safer than riding with friends or family members.” To that effect, Missouri works hard to keep all our children safe. It is worth noting that a total of 281 Missouri school districts earned the Patrol’s Total Fleet Excellence Award, obtaining an approval rating of 90% or higher with no buses placed out of service. That equates to 6,532 buses in these award-winning fleets are eligible to display the Total Fleet Excellence sticker on the buses. Source: Mo State Highway patrol. Hopefully this information helps us all to remember our children are more important than any meeting, appointment, text, etc that might distract us from the driving at hand.
